Helping Young Leaders Gain Their Voice

Part 4 of my interview Mark Urso, the owner and president of Bear Contracting, a heavy civil contractor out of Bridgeport, WV.

Me: Can you share we us some highlights of how your young leaders have grown throughout this process?

Mark:

“Perhaps the biggest thing is that they’ve learned HOW to make good decisions. For example, how to decide whether or not to promote someone. There’s a simple tool called “GWC,” which stands for Gets It, Wants It, and Capacity to Do It.” You ask that question all the time and then the younger generation gets to the point where they can say, “Hey, I’m going to make that decision. This is who I think can handle the project.”

“they’ve learned HOW to make decisions.”

“The concept of ‘Open and Honest’ is unbelievably valuable because so many people in my organization were used to me doing all the talking, and based on their past behavior, they were thinking, ‘OK, this is what Mark wants to do, so this is the decision. I guess I’ll have to [do it his way] to keep him happy.”

“they were used to me doing all the talking.”

“Open and Honest allows for a forum that they now can voice their opinion and ideas and know that no one is going to get mad.  Rather they understand the additional ideas and criticism is what is best for the Team.  We are no longer worrying about saying something or not saying something.  We are no longer stuck seeing nothing getting better, rather we see results and improvements and a much better Team approach.”

“we are no longer worrying… we are no longer stuck.”

“As we’ve functioned more and more as a team, these young leaders of mine have learned to speak up, to be Open and Honest, and express their own opinions and they’ve realized that what’s said in our meetings is addressed and then it’s over, painful or not. They’ve become comfortable with speaking up and sharing their opinion on what they think is best for a situation and will help the company.”

“More and more, we’re hearing additional voices.”
